Sign Our Death Warrants
I am close to most of my relatives, near and distant, despite difference of religion and opinion. Among them are Taoists, agnostics, atheists and also Christians. It is common among them to equate Malays as Muslims and Muslims as Malays just like almost every Malaysians in the country do. Being a Chinese by race and a Muslim by faith, I am like their punching bag - quite used to it now. A lot of testing of patience and listening skills.
Since I talk to adults often since I was a teenager, I have opportunities to listen to their expression of hate and displeasure of corrupted Malay civil servants. Stories of their businesses having no choice but to bribe these civil servants to get things done are common. I can see how frustrated and angry they are. I understand.
The irony is a relative, who are among birds of the same feather, popped the idea of paying RM 3000 of bribe to exclude her daughter from joining the National Service programme. What is wrong with sending her daughter to NS for some experience meeting people of diverse races, religions and states? She could turn to be an independent person after years of living with a silver spoon in her mouth. I never expect her to utter such words. What more when she tells people how wonderful teaching of Christ is.
You see, when the Chinese are seen to be bribing the mainly Malay government servants, the Chinese are signing their own death warrant.
On another note, I strongly believe we should send our able-bodied school leavers to military National Service just like Singapore.
