Who Should I Vote?
History was my favourite subject in high school. When I was given a book voucher on Speech Day in standard 6, I used it to buy a PMR history reference book published by Sasbadi back in 1994.
History was and still is fascinating. Almost all my classmates in ACS Sitiawan knew my interest and depth of knowledge in history. Scoring A’s for History wasn’t difficult at all. With my frequent discussions with adults and friends of various races and coupled with my understanding of local history, I am able to understand many current issues affecting us which my contemporaries do not. Personally, I find it peculiar when young adults ask about the NEP, Malay rights, May 13 and even quota for public university admission. They must have been sleeping in History class! No thanks to the boring teacher.
When Datuk Seri Anwar was detained under the ISA in 1998, the subsequent events woke me from my ’sleep’. The newspaper reports on his sodomy trial was the hottest topic then. The trial was an eye-opener to many including yours truly. When Mr Azizan, who was Anwar’s former driver, was not consistent in his testimony, I knew Dr M went astray.
The following year, I had the opportunity to sit beside a friend in class who was a staunch supporter of PAS. She shared a lot on issues she heard at PAS’ public talks (ceramah). We had a numerous discussions and arguments. I think I learn a lot about politics before joining MMU as an undergraduate. Ever since, I have been against BN policies which are unjust. It may appear to many I am a supporter of certain political parties particularly PAS but I beg to differ.
I am inclined to support actions which I feel is just and fair as opposed to blind support of certain political parties and leaders. If the opposition’s opinions are wrong, racist in nature or impractical, without a single doubt I shall make myself heard. After all, no human is perfect. To err is human but that does not stop us from improving at our pace every single day.
This 12′th General Election, I sincerely hope we will have a stronger opposition voice in Parliament and State Assemblies. Barisan Nasional is likely to be returned to power but an effective opposition will keep our friends in BN on their toes. We may have differing opinions but let’s help each other to improve this country. What is better than having many splendid ideas and arguments in Parliament/State Assemblies than saying “yes sir” all the time to our bosses?
